Titled Magic Ulu, this Stonecut & Stencil Print was created by Inuit graphic artist Ningiukulu Teevee in 2016 and depicts an ulu, a type of knife used traditionally by Inuit women which features a distinctive crescent-shaped blade.

The Ulu is a versatile tool that can be utilized in a variety of tasks; from cutting meat and skinning animals, to preparing food and sewing. They can also be used for cutting through ice or frozen foods. Ulu's are highly personal objects, often passed down from generation to generation and decorated with personal engravings. As they carry both meaning and memory, they are treated as powerful spiritual objects capable of carrying connections to both family and homeland.

This print was created for the 2016 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection, released by the renowned Kinngait Studios, located on the Isle of Dorset, in Nunavut, Canada.

Kinngait Studios is owned and operated by the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative; a community run cultural organisation which has been supporting the development of its established and emerging artistic members since 1959; many of whom (like Teevee) hold national and international acclaim.

We are delighted to be the first gallery in Scotland to represent works for sale from Kinngait's flourishing artistic community. As well as the artwork featured in our Tales from the Arctic Exhibition we also have access to an extensive archive of historic and contemporary original prints, drawings, sculptures and reproduction prints which we can ship direct to your door.
