While the mainland, interior territories of the St̓át̓imc First Nation are known for their breathtaking mountains, forests and abundant river and lake systems, to the southeast east, the coastal territories of the Snuneymuxw encompass some of the most biodiverse waters at the heart of the Salish Sea which separates Vancouver Island from the Pacific Northwest Coast.
With St’át’imc basket weaving patterns and a swinging, green and blue interior this small bowl expresses a meeting of land and sea. This vessel, with its elegant shape and black, hand-carved exterior further epitomises the unique qualities of Patrick's work.
Patrick’s body of work also features an array of weaving patterns which take inspiration from both Interior Salish & Coast Salish basketry. Interior Salish & Coast Salish weaving is renowned for its astonishing intricacy and beauty and the knowledge of how to create vessels such as baskets for both ceremonial and practical use has been passed down through the generations for over 4,000 years.
