About the Event
Join Edgelands Art Gallery & Cultural Centre for an enchanting winter workshop at Dark Skies Gigha Festival 2025.
The hamlet of Kinngait on the Isle of Dorset is home to an extraordinary artistic community who since the 1950's have brought Inuit art and culture to international attention and renown. The northern night sky viewable from the island hosts a dazzling array of celestial bodies which over the years have inspired the creation of a diverse range of prints, drawings and sculptures by Kinngait’s artists. The celestial bodies of the moon and sun, stars and constellations hold great significance in Inuit culture, carrying with them across the centuries, ancient oral histories and methods of survival including; the knowledge of how to read time, mark the changing seasons and navigate across Arctic lands, ice and seas.
Join us for an enchanting winter curator talk & workshop where we will introduce you to the night skies above the Isle of Dorset through the art of Kinngait’s artists and share with you the Inuktitut names of important stars and constellations as well as the stories associated with them. Inspired by our journey across Arctic skies, you will also create your own constellation wall hanging featuring hand woven plant fibres, clay and other seasonal, natural materials. This workshop also includes a beautiful light lunch full of winter treats.

To find out more about the art of Kinngait's Inuit artists check out our From Ice Flows to Shore: Tales from the Arctic exhibition or visit our Artist Directory.
